Abstract
The overall vision of PABlOS is to develop an e-learning P4P (People4People, an extension of Peer2Peer) oriented application using the bigger amount of OpenSource Components as possible, merging advances in networking, communication and information technology services towards a unique learning environment. The application will enable the dynamic creation and provisioning of P4P services based on the loose coupling of a large number of distributed services that will be integrated towards fulfilling end users requests for personalized services. PABlOS will provide the runtime environment for operating such services, a development environment where services can be built, as well as application clients ensuring access to offered services through any kind of devices, either mobile or fixed. PABlOS will also provide an underlying framework that will provide basic services, such as directory services, billing, context management, etc. to the P4P applications (following previous successful P2P models, such as Napster) Based in this technology, different workgroup application could be developed, as e-learning, virtual and remote offices or others

In the scope of the project, an e-learning test-bed will be developed to show how these services can be provided and enhance the e-learning experience over currently available technologies. A key element for ensuring the fast uptake and maintenance of the PABlOS results will be the adoption of Open Source principles.

To fulfil the PABlOS vision, the following work is planned:

  • New models (both technical and business) specifying how services will be coupled, integrated, assembled and ultimately offered by various service providers.
  • An environment for rapid and cost effective building of services using the new platform. The P2P technology do not implies the use of servers. The application could be self-disseminated between several client-server or with servers and clients.
  • Innovative application clients for accessing the functionality of new services in multiple environments.
  • Implementation of clients for different users: PC clients, lightweight clients for mobile/embedded devices, etc.
  • A set of P4P e-learning applications based on the PABlOS framework that allow the cooperative work of individuals and illustrate the possibilities of the developed technology, such as shared workspaces, electronic blackboards, video-conference, etc.
Focus areas
  • Develop an e-learning P4P (People4People application using Open Source Components
  • Enable dynamic P4P service creation and provisioning for a large number of distributed services for personalized services
Expected outcome
  • Specify new business models and scenarios for P4P applications
  • Establish a PABIOS framework providing services and components to be used by PABIOS platforms
  • Design and implement tools to integrate methodologies and techniques for P4P application development, testing, and deployment
